What to do if you find a sea turtle

It can be daunting if you find a turtle, but knowing what you should and shouldn't do can help save the turtle.

Do

Do NOT

  • Put it back in the sea
  • Warm it up at all
Turtles found on UK shores are often cold-stunned juveniles outside of their usual habitats.

  1. SHELTER & POSITION
Place in a sheltered place, securely on its belly. If inactive, raise the rear of its shell by 30°. Make a recognisable marker and record exact location (e.g. GPS, What3Words)
  2. RECORD INFORMATION
A description, and photos, of the turtle and its behaviour will enable identification of species, size and injuries sustained.
  3. REPORT IMMEDIATELY
Call British Divers Marine Life Rescue on 01825 765546 and notify Marine Environment Monitoring on 01239 683033

If you find a dead turtle...

Dead turtles are valuable for research and should be reported to the Marine Environment Monitoring - https://strandings.com/

Fresh specimens should be preserved in cold storage where possible.
